Funniest People to Follow on Twitter

November 26th, 2008 || 9 Comments »

You may be using Twitter for professional purposes or just to keep in touch with your geek friends, but there are always those times when you want to be entertained. Here is a list of some of the funniest people on Twitter that I have found so far (who are not professional comedians). Feel free to add to this list in the comments below.

1.) Warren Ellis @warrenellis

The British comic book writer who already writes in a Twitter-like format on his website makes some of the most entertaining 140-character remarks I have read in my short time on Twitter. Follow him for about 20 minutes and he may take you on a tour of his Myspace music favorites or philosophize about tweeting.

How to get noticed via Twitter

November 24th, 2008 || 4 Comments »

Last week, I managed to bring a few hundred visitors to my unknown blog thanks mainly to Twitter. But I am far from a Linkerati on Twitter. I started using it about 1 month ago. Since then I have acquired a modest 50 or so followers.

What I did was get the right people’s attention. If I got someone who does have 1000+ followers, then I would be able to achieve my goal of simply getting my name out there (that is the whole point of this blog, BTW).

Here is how I went about attracting a relatively high number of visits to my blog in one week, simply by Tweeting:

1.) Watch Twitscoop

There was all this talk on Twitter about Twitterank stealing passwords etc. on Nov 12th. So I had already started following some of the Android tweeters (I am planning on getting a G1). I noticed that @AndroGeek mentioned something about Twitterank. So replied letting him know about the recent news, and he retweeted:

The news may not have been accurate, but it does not matter. Others followed suite, retweeting. What came of this? I got a few more followers.

10 ways to piss off an SEO

November 20th, 2008 || 30 Comments »

These are various ways in which your average web designer/developer can cause havoc to the mental health of your average SEO. Here it goes, in no particular order:

  1. Forget to place a robots.txt file on the dev server.

    It’s great that Google is already picking up pages and that our dev server is ranking for “cute puppy clothing”.

    Ever heard of duplicate content? Have fun writing out those 301 redirects. If you are not going to secure the dev server with a client login, then at least have the decency to place a robots.txt file that disallows bots from indexing a site before its in its final resting place.

    Barack Obama stops tweeting

    November 18th, 2008 || 2 Comments »

    Obama stopped tweeting on November 5.

    Obama stopped tweeting on November 5.

    At 2:34 PM, on November 5, 2008, a Barack Obama staffer tweeted what may be the last tweet anyone will ever receive from @BarackObama (at least until his re-election):

    We just made history. All of this happened because you gave your time, talent and passion. All of this happened because of you. Thanks (see tweet)

    That same day, Tweeters were already wondering whether Barack Obama would continue tweeting. They mostly looked forward to getting tweets directly from the president-elect himself:

    Public Enemy likes SEOMoz's Linkscape

    This is me and a member of Public Enemy at Big Apple Con this weekend. I happened to be wearing an SEOMoz Linkscape t-shirt that day. I am 90% sure it’s James Bomb in this photo, as answers to my question on Yahoo! seem to point to.

    Taking off the noindex!

    November 17th, 2008 || No Comments »

    I finally took some time this weekend to finish up on my blog. It still needs a lot of work obviously, but as with many thing, it is a work in progress.

    Probably not the best time to start blogging either considering that it is becoming a thing of the past with sites like Twitter giving us the chance to share information with much more ease. I do however need a place to just post stuff that may or may not be related to SEO. And I am not really looking to generate traffic, but I do want to be sure that if I wanted to some day I could have a place to start without starting from scratch as I am right now.

    So here it goes, taking off the noindex from the robots.txt file…

    Stop Nickel & Diming SEO Clients

    November 13th, 2008 || No Comments »

    I read a lot about what sort of advice to give to SEO clients, how to educate them about what SEO is really about, generating interesting content, etc…but how helpful is that to a client once you are no longer providing them with SEO services? If a client does not have the means with which to perform all of the tasks that you just advised them on, then they will continually need to rely on you for all on-site SEO edits they may wish to make later down the road, once your SEO contract is through. Give them SEO tools that will put their knowledge to good use.
