Barack Obama stops tweeting
Posted on: Tuesday, November 18th, 2008
At 2:34 PM, on November 5, 2008, a Barack Obama staffer tweeted what may be the last tweet anyone will ever receive from @BarackObama (at least until his re-election):
We just made history. All of this happened because you gave your time, talent and passion. All of this happened because of you. Thanks (see tweet)
That same day, Tweeters were already wondering whether Barack Obama would continue tweeting. They mostly looked forward to getting tweets directly from the president-elect himself:
Question: Do you suppose they’ll keep up the Barack Obama tweeting? Or will it become a matter of national security that they stop it? - @beckstrordinary
Will Barack Obama keep tweeting after this election? And will he tweet himself (in stead of his team). - @molislaegers
I am sure that it was not actually Barack tweeting but wouldn’t it be cool if now he actually did tweet as a method of communication? - @greggehr
I hope that Barack Obama doesn’t stop tweeting after he moves into the White House. His Tweets make me happy. (No worries there, Michelle) - @Subdiva
A few days later the realization sunk in that Barack would no longer be tweeting. It was painful to witness:
@BarackObama I haven’t heard a tweet since you won the election, Barack. What’s up with that? - @zackwharton
Barack’s changed. Ever since his victory he’s stopped tweeting me. Some people let these things go to their heads, I guess. - @Bodhipaksa
Is thinking that Barack should keep tweeting - @aaronhb
Memo to Barack on Twitter: Very bad time to stop tweeting. - @johnbattelle
i miss barack’s tweeting. - @natejones
see Barack Obama / his aides have stopped tweeting since they won. Cynical! - @davechaffey
The situation came to a new climax yesterday when @beatleskid7 got all mavericky and started direct messaging Obama:
sending directs to barack, cuz “he” stopped tweeting after the win. I wanna see something like “getting a hot dog with @colinpowel”
My friend Zack believes that Obama probably stopped tweeting because he did not want to be criticized for using tax payer money to use Twitter since his staff will all soon be federal employees. What are your thoughts? Tweet me at @alhankeser or comment here.
Update (2:42PM, Wed Nov 19): Here is a post on thenextweb.com on how to tell Obama that he should not stop tweeting.

I guess this goes to show that new Digg accounts have little to no influence. And I don’t like asking people to Digg stuff.
